How Louisville Arrests Move
Louisville is the seat of Jefferson County. It is also the core city of the consolidated Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government. The 2020 Census counted 246,161 people inside the incorporated city alone. It listed the metro-government balance separately. So one arrest story can carry four labels: Louisville Metro, LMPD, Jefferson County, and LMDC. Those names are related. They are not the same agency or the same record.
An Louisville Metro Police Department officer makes the arrest. Then Louisville Metro Department of Corrections builds the adult booking record. The clerk keeps whatever the court does later. LMPD procedures route arrestees to LMDC. The usual paper trail runs from police report or citation to a jail custody entry. Not every citation lands in jail, though. A warrant return, a court remand, or a transfer can produce a booking with no new street arrest attached. An alleged supervision violation can do the same.
Where Louisville Arrests Appear
No single source answers every arrest question. Custody checks start with Metro Corrections. Questions about the police event go to LMPD. Court records carry the later disposition, the recorded outcome of a charge, while news and outside indexes only offer leads that prove neither custody nor completeness.
| Channel | What it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| LMDC search | Current adult custody and booking fields | Official, but not full arrest history |
| LMPD records | Reports, citations, narratives | Official; redactions may apply |
| Jefferson courts | Case events and disposition | Not a live jail record |
| Local news | Selected incidents | Story-driven, not complete |
| County indexes | Copied booking entries | Third-party and possibly stale |
The official LMDC Inmate Search is the front door to the jail's public portal. The tool has long covered current-inmate lookup, "Booked Today," a booking log, charge and bond fields, future court dates, and photos of people in custody. Its layout changes from time to time. A blank screen or missing photo means nothing about whether an arrest happened.
Find a Louisville Booking
A police event and jail intake are two steps in sequence. Transport, screening, data entry, and system syncing can all delay a fresh result. A late-night arrest may show under the next booking date, and someone released right after intake may drop off the current display before anyone else looks.
- Open the official LMDC inmate-search page and follow its current portal link.
- Search the exact name, then use booking date or inmate number when offered.
- Save the booking number, charge wording, date, custody status, and official URL.
- If no result appears, call LMDC at 502-574-8477 or request the named record.
- Ask LMPD for the police report and the court clerk for the later outcome.
The Arrests Last 24 Hours page walks through the same-day window. A missing roster entry can mean several things. It can point to release, delay, a protected record, a citation outcome, or a search mismatch. Juvenile records carry extra protection. A missing photo says nothing either.
Keep custody states separate. A just-booked person may appear on LMDC after processing. A released person can vanish from the current display while an agency record still exists. Someone moved to state custody belongs in the Kentucky Department of Corrections KOOL system. VINELink tracks status and sends alerts. It never replaces the police narrative or the court file. The official LMDC inmate-information hub shows how the pieces fit together. The current search, the jail dashboard, VINE, and general information routes all connect there.

The LMDC inmate-information page routes visitors to tools. It is not a permanent arrest list or a photo gallery.
LMPD Arrest Record Requests
The LMPD Open Records page handles the police side. A strong request names the person and an approximate date and place. Add a report or citation number if known. List every item sought. The police file may hold the officer narrative. It may also hold event detail no jail roster shows. Kentucky exemptions can shield active-investigation material, private data, juvenile material, and other restricted content.
LMDC keeps its own booking and custody material. Use the Corrections request form for a released or unavailable entry. Say whether you want an intake record or a booking photograph. Include release information or another named item. LMPD cannot always hand over a jail-held photo. LMDC cannot retell the arrest itself.

This route covers police reports. LMDC stays the official source for jail bookings and current adult custody.
Louisville Arrest Intake Scale
LMDC's 2024 fact sheet reports 17,421 bookings. That averages 48 per day. LMPD is the top arresting agency, and JCSO is second. That is a measure of jail intake volume. It counts neither guilt nor every police contact. The scale also explains why a news story falls short of the full picture. An outside county index can never stand in for an official Louisville arrest feed.
Label your timestamps when comparing records. Arrest time, booking time, release time, and search time each mean something different. "Booked today" reflects the jail's booking date, which may not match first police contact. A later correction can change a displayed field. Keep the exact charge language and leave it at that.
- Booking
- The jail intake that creates a custody record.
- Bond
- A court-set release condition while a case is pending.
- Remand
- A court direction placing a person in custody.
- Disposition
- The court's later recorded outcome.
Note: Daily totals shift with intake, release, corrections, and portal access, so a dated official document beats an undated copy.
Louisville Arrests and Court Outcomes
A booking at LMDC and a court case are separate things. The jail lists intake details; the courthouse decides what happens next. For motions, amended charges, or a final outcome, the Jefferson County Court of Justice page is the right door. It routes visitors to District, Circuit, Family, and other court services.
Say "the booking record lists" when you describe a charge. Charges get reduced, dismissed, or amended. A plea or a judgment may resolve them. Release from LMDC only means custody changed. It says nothing about how the case ended.
Keep the pieces straight. The arrest report, the intake record, the custody change, and the court result belong in separate columns of your notes. When an outcome matters, get the court document itself. That habit is Louisville's best safeguard, especially since similar names can point to different people.
Louisville Police App Limits
LMPD does offer an official mobile app. Published features include department contacts, crime maps, tips, alerts, social links, and general police services. It can point you to the right division fast. The listings show no same-day booking feed and no booking-photo search. Treat it as a service tool, not a version of the LMDC roster. A crime-map marker reflects reported activity in an area, nothing more.
The split matters in consolidated Louisville. LMPD patrols. LMDC holds adult inmates. JCSO handles court process and related duties. Want a police narrative? Start with LMPD. Confirming present custody? Start with LMDC. Tracking a release or transfer, Kentucky VINE works once you have the correct record. Each channel answers one piece of the arrest and custody sequence.
Apps also change faster than agency record pages. Check the publisher and the current feature list first. A third-party app with a sheriff or jail label may not be official at all. If an app and the official record disagree, trust the agency page and ask the custodian directly.
Note: LMPD's app is a police-service channel, not a Louisville arrest roster or booking-photo archive.
Louisville Mugshots and News
LMDC has shown photos for current adult inmates. That display is not a permanent archive. A released entry can vanish. A protected record may never show up. For a specific releasable booking image, ask the holding agency rather than trusting a copied gallery. The wider photo routes and legal limits sit in the Jefferson County booking-photo overview.
Newsrooms pick stories by news value. WDRB, WAVE, WLKY, Louisville Public Media, and the Courier Journal cover selected Louisville events, not a complete daily list. RecentlyBooked and Kentucky.Arrests.org do have Jefferson County pages, but they are countywide third-party indexes, not LMPD feeds. Stale charges, duplicate entries, and wrong custodian labels all appear on such sites. Official LMDC, LMPD, and court records control.
Treat any copied result as a lead only. Check its state, county, date, booking number, and named arresting agency against the official record. Then read the court file before repeating the initial charge. A third-party page can keep an old photo or intake claim long after LMDC updates its display. Its presence proves nothing about current custody.
Agency boundaries matter here too. JCSO serves court process but does not run LMDC's roster. Kentucky KOOL tracks state correctional custody, not a fresh Louisville booking. A federal locator is yet another system. Confirm the agency name before you search or request a document.
